Morbidity rates were computed from the total number of new cases each year, by date of report and not by date of diagnosis. Total morbidity cases were obtained from the following: Sources: Utah Morbidity: Center For Disease Control, 1986-90, Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Review. 21(55); 26(52); 21(51 -52); 28(51-52); 22(51-52). Figure 13 Both Utah and the nation have seen an increase in new AIDS cases from 1984 to 1990, although Utah remains below the nation's incidence rate (Figure 13). The UtahiU.S. comparison shows Utah to be at about one-third the rate of the nation in the number of newly reported cases of AIDS, although there are slight yearly variations (Table 17). AIDS-related death rates are higher for the U.S. than for Utah (Table 17). Utah and the nation have increased in crude death rates between 1987 and 1990. Utah had a 55% increase in total deaths due to AIDS between 1987 and 1990, while the U.S. increased by 75%. Certain diseases are more closely associated with AIDS than others. These diseases take advantage of a weakened immune system and eventually cause death. Those diseases identified as AIDS-related depend on how AIDS is defined. The definition of which diseases to include has changed periodically as more is known about AIDS, making historical comparisons over time difficult. As new diseases are included in AIDS-related statistics, there is a rise in AIDS incidence rates and AIDS-related deaths. Utah's Health: An Annual Review 1993 17 |
