Show Dee Jacobson was only one of several to BITCH about current bookstore policies The Traffic Planning Committee's decision to charge an additional parking fee was not without protest by those who had already purchased parking stickers. Some proceeded to 'bury the bookstore' with music. Student protests brought a great deal of attention to campus improvements this year. As always, the students' howls brought not only neighbors who threw shoes to quiet them, but also those who listened, took sympathy and added fuel for their cause. Some of the campus affairs that evoked yips and yells were the removal of the juke box and the "host" in the Huddle, the installation of a twenty-five cent parking area in the Union parking lot, and various bookstore policies. Members of Bookstore Improvement Through Campus Harrassment (better known as B.I.T.C.H.) staged one of the most effective protests of the year. The bookstore demonstrations by B.I.T.C.H. members (led by Russell Cressman) were cited as the direct cause for the Bookstore Advisory Board's recommendations regarding a ten percent discount for students as well as faculty members, a larger stocking of both textbooks and paperbacks, and other revisions including a more efficient book exchange. Doggedly, B.I.T.C.H. stuck to peaceful picketing, knowing that progress, however slight, was being made. Responsible citizens in action once again proved effective. 122 |
