He attended Weber State, where he majored in Chemistry and minored in just about everything else. He graduated summa cum laude and was the outstanding chemistry graduate of 1983. Others have taken off with such a record and gone on to honors in chemistry academia or lucrative jobs at Bell Labs. Niel, however, the son of a family practitioner, already knew that he wanted to become a member of the proud profession himself. During the medical school he worked on an epidemiological study in the use of mammography as a screening tool in a large family practice clinic, achieved honors in sophomore physical diagnosis, participated in the Family Practice Honors Program, and did a preceptorship in family practice in Alaska. His intramural teams have won championships in football, basketball, and softball. From babyhood, Niel's face has had that "Trust Me" look which, along with his skills as a diagnostician, calm, confident demeanor, and love of all aspects of life, will keep him, if not in wild riches, in high regard among his colleagues and patients, and in all the fishing trips and freebies he can handle. |
