Show Rick was destined from day one to star in Pediatrics, and has used his background in genetics research and counseling to become one of the few classmates to say he was underchallenged during his stay here. The guy has won honors in surgery, psychiatry, ob/gyn, and peds while just missing AOA selection (rub it in, Chris) and has produced a spectacular C.V. that includes the following excerpt from his personal statement: Probably the most important influence on my decision to pursue pediatrics has been my three year old daughter Lindsay. She has opened the door for me to see the immensely complex, hilarious, touching world of child development. Through her I have seen first hand how differently children view the world than we as adults do. I see a challenge in learning enough about the intricacies of child development to help children develop a positive approach to health care at an early age. The opportunity to work with parents in helping both their sick and healthy children adjust within the family unit also gives pediatrics a unique position among the specialties in medicine. My ultimate goal as a pediatrician is to specialize in clinical genetics as a dysmorphologist but it is extremly important to me to acquire the clinical accumen necessary to become an adept general pediatrician. Although there are many excellent geneticists from other fields, a strong pediatric background is a superb springboard to base a clinical practice such as dysmorphology which requires working with handicapped children and their families. For this reason I am looking for a residency program which offers the opportunity to gain thorough knowledge in the principles of general pediatrics as well as the art of practicing this specialty. A program such as this would need to have a strong broad academic faculty willing to enthusiastically teach and support their house officers. A program well balanced with respect to outpatient and inpatient exposure would be highly desirable in an effort to afford housestaff a wide range of pediatric problems. Such a program would be conducive to maintaining good morale among its house officers another important aspect of any training program ... Articulate, cool, funnier than hell, and a terrific dad to the cutest kids on the planet (obviously the products of genetic manipulation or Wendy's powerful genetic superiority, thank God), Rick will put Utah on the Peds map. We hope Wendy will forgive him for sneaking the expensive hiking boots and gortex jacket past her. They went for a good cause ... \ RICK MARTIN |
