Gregory ampton From Acoma the Spaniards traveled north-northeast to the Pueblo of closely paral lei to the present New Mexico Highway 23, which follows Acoma Creek through Acoma Val ley. This route, "a long canada with mesas on either side" fits the description given by Dominguez in his Missions of New Mexico (p. 188. See ful I reference under Research Methods for Dec. 13-16, 1776). Interstate 40 intersects the old trai I before it reaches the Rio San Jose. Turning down the Rio, the Spaniards in about four miles reahed laguna perched on'a hi I Ion the left bank of the Rio San Jose. Today's travelers on 1-40 may enjoy a spectacular view of laguna from a rest stop across the river from the pueblo. laguna taking route a Escalante appears to be in error in his mileage for the day. The dis stance between the two pueblos is about 16 mi les, closer to six leagues than to four. Dominguez in his report on the Missions (Adams and Chavez, 1956) makes the same mistake. Gregory Crampton at laguna, Dominguez and Escalante continued their jour leagues for the day, nearly 16 mi les, and camping at a place named EI Alamo. This spot coincides with Whipple's EI Alamo which he states is also known as Sheep Springs, a watering place mentioned by other travelers (See Foreman, ed., 1941, 120). Neither EI Alamo nor Sheep Springs were found on any modern map, but Sheep Springs does appear on Wheeler's Atlas Sheet No. 77, publ ished about 1879. The location, as given by Wheeler, ney, traveling would be approximately at the single direction, east-northeast, Highway 6, The six which is intersection of Interstate 40 and New Mexico (not east-northeast) from laguna. 16 mi les east-southeast listed -205- has prompted a few previous |
