Today, in part to counter a movement of commerce to outlying shopping malls, there is some evidence of restoration and rehabilitation activities in the District. Along with the landscaping done in 1978, the 1974 Community Development Department Central Business District Plan strongly suggested that existing facades be rejuvenated and architectural controls be maintained in order to "revitalize the appearance of the downtown area." A private group called Town Square Associates has purchased several of the significant commercial buildings near the University Avenue-Center Street intersection. They have begun restoration of the upper stories of the Knight Block, including putting the clock in running condition, and have commissioned drawings of a Victorian restoration of the area, to be called Provo Town Square. |
