Show I PRESENT STATUS OF THE PROJECT The Bonneville Unit is a federal water development project designed by the Bureau of Reclamation. It involves diversion of 1$6,000 acre-feet of water from streams on the South slope of the Uinta* Mountains and transportation of this water through the Wasatch Mountains to the Bonneville Basin (Wasatch Front) primarily for use by irrigation interests„ It also involves diking portions of Utah Lake (reducing it to 2/3 of its present size) and exchanging the resulting 84,000 acre-feet of evaporative savings for the Jordanelle Reservoir storage which is keyed to M § I use. ^ Approximately 61,000 acre-feet of water are presently being diverted from the Uinta Basin through the existing Strawberry Reservoir to the Bonneville Basin for irrigation purposes.3 Portions of the Bonneville Unit are under construction. About $65,000,000 of a currently-estimated total cost of over $500,000,000 has been spent to date on this unit„3 The Bureau of Reclamation has released a draft environmental statement on the Bonneville Unit. The final environmental statement is expected to be released in January or February,, That agency is continuing with the Central Utah Project, Bonneville Unit as presently constituted, in spite of considerable concern expressed by the U.S. Forest Service, the Utah Department of Natural Resources, and numerous citizen-groups and individuals* II WATER SUPPLY AND DEMAND The approximate supply of water in the Bonneville Basin Acre Feet which includes the Bear (2,130,000 A.F.)
