Show Dr. David C. Raskin Page 2 March 25, 1974 In a word of self-defense, if you will permit it, I will say that I think that I stand up on environment issues which I think to be of fundamental importance, even though I think the political repercussions will be severe. Such a case is the Zion Canyon Wilderness proposal, which many of my environmental friends both here and in Utah felt I should avoid answering at all." A copy of my-newsletter to Southern Utah is enclosed where I explain my feelings in the matter. You might be interested in knowing that I attended a town meeting in January in St. George at which there were 275 people present and there was no one there who was in favor of the Zion Wilderness. During the course of the meeting, a representative of the Chamber of Commerce read a letter to me which they had written, indicating that if I supported wilderness that nobody in Washington County would vote for me in any succeeding election. I submit to you that that is a basic issue and upon which I could take no other stand than the one I did &&&t I spoke out. It was an issue which was so important to those people'down there, that they deserved an answer, even though it was one that none of them wanted, v Lastly, please be assured that I understand yourmotivations and your concerns, and I would be the last to urge you againoW»c course of action inconsistent with your conscience. For my own part, I will attempt to compromise on practices but not on principle, where I think the times and the situations require it. With all best personal regards. / Wayne Owens cc: Ruth Frear Marion Edy George Alders on Brock Evans Enclosures |
