Raskin 1865 Herbert Avenue Salt Lake City, Utah 84108 Dear Dave: Thank you for your cancuu, torthright letter of March 12 relative to my political activities and your unwillingness to actively work for my election to the Senate based on my legislative activities on behalf of environmental causes during my first year in the Congress. First of a l l , I want to express appreciation for your friendship and association and candid remarks over past years, and for your substantia] contributions to my election in 1972. I recognize that your contributions were substantive, and I am grateful for your help. I have never admitted a&m*s&tmggm. than that I am a politician, and I have never at any point-private or public--tried to pass myself off as an environmental purist. I think there are environmental compromises which must be made to protect other values. I've tried to conduct myself publicly in that regard and have held myself open and available to discuss issues with b oth sides to any question. Both you and your wife have participated in many such discussions with me. As you know, I meet at least monthly with an environ mental group to discuss relevant issues, which you have attended from time to time. The introduction of H.R. 12745 was a mistake. Both sides were unhappy, as you point out. It seemed to me to be a rational attempt to get the matter decided, but no one agrees with me. It was, obviously, unwise to do it without prior consultation-apoint which I regret. The matter will, of course, die. Apparently, it deserved death. A statement, prepared by my staff, points out that "the four groups who filed the suit are based in other s t a t e s . " This slipped by me unnoticed. As Richard Nixon would say, "I take responsibility for the statement. " I have studiously avoided otherwise referring to environmentalists as out-of-state groups, but I let that slip by unnoticed. It is the second apology. MADE WITH RECYCLED FIBERS |
