Thank you! and hung up. Boy, this Major was just- He called the company unit and I m Company Gunny. He said, "What kind of outfit are you running over there? These god damn PFC s trying to talk to the Commandant." I said, "I'll take care of it." I knew who he was. Well, now they're down to the airstrip waiting for the plane to come in, and they're all standing there with their cameras, and this Major's standing there, and the Commandant gets off the plane and looks around, (and I forget this kid's name now, Wayne, or something). He says, "Wayne!" [laughing] "Lenny, how are you?" That's the Commandant, and he calls him by his first name! And the Commandant comes up and hugged him, and "God," he says. "I haven't seen you in-" oh, it was five or six years or something. "Geez, I've missed seeing you so much! My daughter's coming in tomorrow." Now the General's house at Pendleton is called the Hacienda. That's where the Commanding Officer of Pendleton lives. He says, "We'll be down at the Hacienda. Do you think you can get tomorrow? Do you think you can get away and come down and visit with us? He says, "Well, I think my Company Gunny will let me." And that's to the Commandant. He don't say, "I want you down there." It's "Can you get away?" So that Fairborn come to me, and he says, "Can I get out of here tomorrow, because I'm going to 139 |
