Show liked the marines and liked the Am ricans. It wasn t until later until th y ba k d hi ng Kai-shek that we fell out of favor because he was nothing but a damn warlord. H wa no good, and unfortunately we've always done that. We've always backed- JAS: The wrong dictator. BILL: Yeah, yeah. We have. Think about it. Then there 's poor little Castro down there in Cuba. If we opened up the trade to Cuba, he wouldn't last a month. If they let the gamblers and stuff go in and open up these casinos again, and traded with Cuba and bought their cigars, hell, he couldn't hold Cuba together for a month. But they chastise him, and what do they do with the other people? They kowtow to them and give them billions of dollars. Castro's not even a good dictator. Now he's almost dead. JAS: So, because of the points that you accumulated, you weren't allowed to continue in the service, is that right? BILL: No, I had two years overseas and two Purple Hearts. They gave you so many points for every month overseas, and so many points for every Purple Heart, and I don't even remember what the points were now, but I had to go home. I tried to talk them into it. What I was going to do was just go home and stay for awhile, and then re-up, come back into the Marine Corps. JAS: But you met your wife? BILL: Yeah, and I got a job. You know, you procrastinate. You keep putting stuff off, saying I'll do it, I'll do it, I'll do it. You're having fun. You're out drinking every night, and raising hell. We got three hundred dollars out of pay, and I had about probably twelve hundred dollars on the books. 123 |
