Show h 11 h l I got hit in th 1 g. W 11 I fi ll in. I know I m hit b cau it hurt lik h 11, an th re s blood all over my legs. All of the platoon hollers ' re you hit?! I said 'Hell yes I'm hit! They said, "Well can you get out? How bad are you hit? ' Well every time I'd raise up to see, they'd shoot this machine gun at me. I wa there, oh, three or four hours before they finally took the pillbox, and then they hauled me out. I've got the bullet somewhere around here; and while I'm looking, because this is a long scar, like the bullet was going end over end. JAS: Looks like three inches. BILL: Oh no, it's only about like that. I exaggerate a little, about like this. JAS: That's huge still. BILL: About like a 30-30, because they use that .31 caliber, and ours is a .30 caliber. That's all. But it's hit on the side, so it looks like it's either a ricochet, but it was tumbling. So it wasn't a straight bullet. Well, I've looked at it, and it's empty in the back. JAS: The bullet? BILL: It's hollow. So what I'm thinking is it' s a 30 aught 6. It's an American bullet, and it was somebody shooting from over here, shooting a tracer, and it hit the pillbox and ricocheted into my leg. JAS: Huh! BILL: And that happens. Ricochets are all the time. You're hearing them, so you know it's no one's fault. I don't know that's what happened, but by this being an empty 114 |
