Show BILL: A test! What kind of a test? What is he testing us for? To h w much w an take? Well, the silly ... Oh, well, I won't. No. A test! No, I can't accept that. At t. He's either ... if there is one - and I won't say there is; I would prefer to say there isn't n - but if there is, he's either so indifferent that he don't give a damn or he can't do anything about it. You know? JAS: Yeah. BILL: Or .. He has no power. So ... JAS: That sort of destroys the whole system, doesn't it? BILL: Yeah. And what if - see, my feelings are ... I had a guy, told my fortune once, a Korean woman, which means nothing. But I was a sergeant then and she stood up and started saluting and stuff and said: "People are going to listen to you and you're going to be an officer." And I thought, "What are you talking about, 'I'm going to be an officer?"' But I did. And she said, "Tell me: If you dream, what do you dream? What do you dream about the hereafter?" And I said, "I don't dream about a hereafter." And she said, "What do you think?" And I said, "Well, you stand at the edge of a cliff. You look down and you look out and there's nothing. That's the end. There isn't anything." And she said, "You don't believe in a hereafter, do you?" And I said, "No, I don't." 50 |
