Show said you've got a division of Chinese coming up the hill you r on. divi i n! I aid, "What did you say?" I said, "You've got a division of Chinese. We're boogying· we're hauling ass! ' Well now, a squad leader's job is you're the last man out of your squad to leave a position. You go last. If you're anything at all, you go last. You get your men out and then you go. So my squad, he said, "Keep your squad here to hold them off from us ' til we all get clear." I said okay. That's normal. He's not picking on me or anything. That's normal. So when they all got clear, (we were doing a little shooting and stuff just over the top of the hill, pinning them down), well this chow truck was still there. So when China Red left, he said, "When I get the company clear, we're going to take a five gallon can of gas and pour on that truck. When you leave, I want you to burn it. I want you to torch it." I said, "Okay, sure. I'm not going to leave it for them." The platoon got clear, so I sent the squad down, and I thought, I'm going to go down there and stand by that truck and light a cigarette and then throw the lighter in the truck. Boy, that will look great, and all these people up on the hill will see me. Well, I started down the hill, and all of a sudden piles of dirt starting popping next to me. I turned around and looked, and the Chinese were coming over the hill. There must have been a hundred of them shooting at me. Boy, I hauled ass. Now, when it's going to one side or the other, you don't, you know-should I move over this way further? Then I'll run right into it, or should I go straight, and then they'll finally sight in on me? I got to the bottom, and I just lit the lighter and threw it. God, they were coming! 81 |
