Show until you kill d th m all, on of the two. Then the army would come up- when you went maybe, tw day with ut h rdly any action. Then they army would come up dig in behind you and th y'd jump off th attack the next day until they come under heavy resistance. And then we would move from this position hike back twelve miles to the truck, get on the trucks and drive to an overnight area. And this one night we're in a big, open field. Great, big open field. There were some tents. Said, "We've got chow!" Boy, everybody said, "Oh, chow, that's neat!" Most of us had thrown our mess kits away; had a piece of cardboard and a plastic spoon or something. Whatever. A stick. Who cared? He said, "We've got a steak and two eggs." They forgot to tell you that they were raw. Raw eggs- they're still eggs- and a raw steak. So everybody went scrounging around and trying to cook these. Well, there must have been 1 00 fires going around. They come out, "Put all the fires out. We're under artillery observation." You got raw steak and two raw eggs. "What the hell am I supposed to do with them?" So everybody took their steak and flung it at the mess tents, all these tents, and pelted the eggs. All except Dee Pasquale, and he threw his eggs- but he kept his steak. Every time we'd stop- we'd be in a firefight and move forward maybe twenty or thirty feet- and he'd get some sticks together, start a fire and start cooking his steak again! 69 |
