Show Th y must have been only two hundred yards behind me. By that tim man wh n I fir d that truck, you could hear them screaming and yelling from that far away b cau e boy they wanted that food! [Laughing] It was down and around a comer and then up this hill, and I finally got around there, and China Red said, "You kinda cut that close didn't you?" Oh, damn. Boy they were mad when I blew that truck. But I was going to look like John Wayne and set it off. You know, just stand there and light a cigarette very casually, and just toss that lighter in. Yeah, I was casual all right. [Laughing] Then we went five days.-we'd go up a hill and be under attack. We'd be shooting all the way up the hill. We were digging in with Hibbard, and Hibbard would be digging the foxhole, and I'd be firing to keep them off of us until we got the foxhole dug. Then at night they would usually quit. They usually lay back at night. Then the next morning we'djump off, and retreat again. That when on for about five days, and they called the platoon leaders and the squad leaders up. China Red says, "How would you like to jump off the attack in the morning?" I said, "Are you crazy?!" He just looked at me and kind of grinned, and he said, "Well, we jump off the attack at 0400 tomorrow morning. I thought, oh, god, we're really going to step in it. The whole battalion jumped off. By ten o' clock- I've got a picture of it, and I don't know exactly where it is- but by ten o'clock, we were in their hospital area. JAS: The Chinese? BILL: There's, yeah. In fact, I popped one guy-well, I can't find it right now. It's in there somewhere. Anyway, I'm getting the Purple Heart there, the medal! That's it. I 82 |
