Pneumonia and Influenza Since 1980, age-adjusted death rates due to pneumonia and influenza are similar in Utah and the nation (Table 28, Figure 22). These death rates declined from 1970 to the mid-19 80's, and then increased in both Utah and the U.S. The year 1970 is included to give the reader a sense of what the death rates were two decades ago. Because influenza is a communicable disease, random fluctuations are to be expected. Individuals with chronic heart or lung disease, and those over 65 years old are particularly at risk. Of the 402 deaths in 1990, 92% were persons 65 years or older.2 Table 29 Utah Age-adjusted Mortality by Sex1 Rates per 100,000 Population Years Total Male Female 1979-81 1982-84 1985-87 1988-90 12.0 10.7 13.2 13.1 15.1 13.3 16.0 15.5 9.8 8.8 11.2 11.4 Source: Utah Department of Health, Bureau of Vital Records and Health Statistics. Unpublished report. Utah males are at an increased risk of death from pneumonia and influenza than are Utah females (Table 29). Both male and female death rates from influenza and pneumonia increased between 1979 and 1990, but the rate of increase for males was smaller. *From 1979 to 1990 the Utah numbers represent a three-year average because of the small number of deaths per year. 2Utah Department of Health, Bureau of Vital Records and Health Sutistics.
