Show Coffee Drinkers Preferred r> Page 4 of 307 This was not the greeting I had hoped to receive considering I was about to make my excellent services as Internet researcher and creative investigator available to someone who was clearly not a fan of my church. I felt that it was far too personal a question to answer, given that we had not really been introduced in any way, and so I said, "Not too far from nowhere." "I got no time for games," he growled. "Your name and number is blocked on my caller ID." "I teach at Snow, and I keep my number unlisted so my students can't bother me with their important personal lives." "Oh," he seemed to relax. "You teach down to Snow, do you?" That's not a typo there. He actually said, "You teach down to Snow." This is the way they talk in Sanpete. I wish that I could say it's the way we talk in Sanpete/ but for a certain category of resident, Sanpete seems like a mistake. I fall into this category. Perhaps the reason it feels like a mistake to me is that no one knows which preposition to use when. I decided to trot out a little of my own manglish and talk like a local, "Yup." "What ya teach?" Notice that the do is gone. Who needs it anyway? Noetic Nephi knew not to confess that I first teach literature, then writing and, after that, research. "I'm the instructor of Internet Research." |
