Show Record 2537 was about twelve miles above Warm Creek on the upstream trip. On our return trip down the river we had no difficulties; we had a raise of water on the down trip. I made one other twelve or fifteen mile trip up the river and a lot of two or three mile trips. We made this trip up to Dandy Crossing to locate mining claims and to see what we could do with regard to naviga- 2538 tion. Later there was a larger boat brought there. I think its length was twenty- six feet, with a beam of perhaps wife feet, six inches, and about a two and a half foot draft. That boat had a four- cylinder gas engine rated as forty horsepower. We also had a scow in connection with that boat and took the large boat and 2539 scow up the river about August 1, 1910. The purpose of this trip was to go up to Warm Creek and get some coal. Whenever we got stuck on a sand bar the crew got out and pulled it with ropes, the crew consisting of four men besides myself. I would say that between Lee's Ferry and Warm Creek we were stuck about ten times. There was a coal prospect up some miles from the mouth of Warm Creek, where they had dug out some coal but had not established a mine. We remained at Warm Creek over night, loaded up with about 2540 three hundred pounds of coal, and came back. On our return journey we ran on to sand bars about twice. I would say that the best water was below Warm Creek. We made no other trips with the large launch except short trips of about two or two and a half miles. In going upstream with the launch and barge, if you did 2541 not hit the current just right, the boat would turn around, on several occasions turning clear around and heading down the river. The large launch came overland to Lee's Ferry from Flagstaff and 2542 was there when I left Lee's Ferry, as were all of the other boats. A dredge and machinery were hauled overland to Lee's Ferry from 2543 Flagstaff. Exhibit 411 is a picture of our camp a few miles above the mouth of the San Juan River and shows the row boat and power 2544 boat with which we went to Dandy Crossing. Exhibit 414 is the Aztec Rapid. Exhibit 412 is a point some ten or twelve miles |
