Show Record 2354 canyon from 1907 until 1915. Messrs. Monette and Russell and I did some placer mining where the old Stanton dredge is located, remaining there for about a month. We took a little gold out and I took the gold with me and went up to Hite and sent for some provisions. Then I went on down to Lee's Ferry where I 2355 was supposed to meet Russell and Monette, but they had left and continued on their journey through Grand Canyon. I then turned around and pulled my boat back up the river to Hite. I made this upstream trip in November. It took me five days to cover the distance between Hite and the Stanton dredge because I didn't know how to rope a boat then as well as I later learned to rope it and couldn't make the time. Ninety per cent of the time I towed my boat. When I left Monette and Russell at the old dredge to go up the river, they started down the river and were supposed to wait for me at Lee's Ferry. It took me five days to make the trip from Hite to Lee's Ferry. I grounded numerous times coming down and in several places ran on to the rocks, but my most serious difficulty was at Shock Rapid. I recall cross-ing a ledge just a little below the mouth of Lake Canyon, but never had very much trouble getting over that ledge, although just before I reached it I ran on to some gravel. In going over 2357 the ledge I dragged my oars. At Lee's Ferry I got enough sup-plies to take me back to Hite. It was an awful trip; I was wet to the waist for about twenty- four days in February and left Lee's Ferry in January. One thing that probably caused the trip to be so hard was my mental condition. I had a one hundred and twenty foot line attached to the bow and then around the stern of the boat. While there are places where you can tow from the shore, there are other places where you must get out and wade, 2358 and that is where I would get wet. I put in the next summer placering on the Olympia Bar about thirty- five miles below Hite. 2359 My nearest neighbor was three and a half miles away. Case Hite lived about fifteen miles away.
