Show Record 2306 I am 60 years old, live in Salt Lake City, and am a miner, having operated as a miner in several of the western states. I 2307 am familiar with the Utah country in and about the Green, Colorado and San Juan Rivers, first entering the country in the fall of 1893, when the panic closed the Colorado mines and I went to the San Juan River in search of gold. I first went to a point about twenty- five or thirty miles above Bluff and there tested the bars. When cold weather came I went back to Montezuma Valley, Colorado, for the winter. That was my only experience on the 2308 upper San Juan. About March 1, 1894, I again went to the San. During the years 1894 and 1895 I made a trip through the first part of the canyon; we went down past the Indian Farms and past the 2312 mouth of Copper Canyon and turned around and came back. Messrs. Edmundson, Clark and I had a little sixteen foot row boat with which we went down the river with a little bedding and grub and a small gold button. When we got down to one of the other placer parties that were down there on the river I traded this button on gold for ten pounds of flour, which we ate on our trip back up the river. There were three men at the mouth of slick Horn Canyon who had boats and we got our boat from them. We made this 2313 trip in the month of August. It was very warm and we had very |
