Show Kenneth Sawyer testified for complainant on direct examination as follows: 2093 I am at present City Engineer for Yuma, Arizona, and am 2094 43 years old. sine maturity my occupation has been surveying and engineering and for a number of years I was with the U. S. reclamation service. In 1914 I was on the Green River between the town of Green River, Utah, and the mouth of the Green, and also on that stretch of the Colorado between Moab and the mouth of the Green River. I was with a party working under John F. Richardson and engaged in making a recognizance and survey for 2095 reservoir and dam sites. One of those dam sites was at the junction of the Colorado and Green Rivers, at which point drilling operations were carried on. the machinery, consisting of a light, horizontal boiler, drill engine, necessary casings, drill tools, drill rods, etc., was shipped on the railroad to Green River, Utah, 2096 and I saw them loading the machinery on to boats at a point near Wimmer's ranch on the Green River. Two scows, approximately six by twenty- four feet with decked over tops, had been constructed. The two scows were separated a distance of five feet and held in 2097 place by decking, thus making practically one boat. Exhibit 265 is a correct representation of the scow, and I think that is the outfit as it was ready to start down the river. The paddle wheel boat shown in the picture belonged to Mr. Wimmer and was called 2098 Marguerite and is pushing the scows. I don't think the scows loaded drew more than eight inches and should imagine that the Marguerite's draft was about the same. In this outfit with which we took the drilling machinery down to the junction we had three small row boats and two small motor boats about fourteen or sixteen feet long in addition to the Marguerite. I traveled on the scows with the machinery, and these scows, with the Marguerite, 2099 led our outfit down the river. I think our down trip took three or four days. We grounded on sand bars many times, the channel being a little difficult to pick out. I remember one occasion 272 |
