Show Record 2015 December. We ran with all the men and supplies in the boats through those rapids, and wherever we could do that we didn't call it much of a rapid. As I recall the worst rapid we encountered in Glen Canyon was Trachyte Rapid, which was not so bad as it had been the previous December. We bumped the bottom at a few places through there. We always had enough water on 2016 either side to use our oars. The sand bars in Glen Canyon were not so bad as they had been in the previous December, but we had to shovel and haul the boats and made one portage of more than half a mile rather than pull and haul and lift the boats, and through that stretch shoved the boats empty. It was at that point that we encountered the reefs and I waded the river as I have explained. I can't give the approximate location of that place, but there is black, volcanic rock on both sides of the river and you can see the lava rock across the country to the southeast from the Henry Mountains. 2017 In response to questions propounded by the Special Master the witness Kane testified that there were ten of fifteen foot breaks in this ledge of rock through which they finally got their boats. The reefs are sand rock and not very hard, so that they wear down in time and have been worn or knocked off by floods when other rocks have rolled on the bottom. There are very few places on Green River or in Glen Canyon where such reefs are found. Resuming his direct examination Mr. Kane testified: 2018 We stayed at Lee's Ferry for six weeks while Messrs. Best and McDonald went back to Denver for another boat with which to go on down. Eventually they returned and we had only one boat and didn't think it safe to go through with just one boat 2019 and obtained a pack outfit from Kanab and Johnson. I spent prac- 2020 tically a year and a half in the Grand Canyon country prospecting on both sides of the river and then went down to tide water and 2021 thence over the Santa Fe railroad to Denver.
