Show Record 2379 anyway. We were making this trip for the purpose of taking moving pictures. We continued on down some twenty miles where Russell became thoroughly soaked and his boat absolutely full of water. We dried his things out and next morning he started through a rapid. 2380 I saw him try to pull out and he couldn't; he and his boat dis-appeared. I followed down the river, saw some fresh footprints and later saw Russell. We never found his boat, and after attempting 2381 various things we started up the river with a raft that we made. We walked along the bank up the river. You can walk on one side or the other of the river clear through Cataract Canyon, except at a point just below the mouth of Dark Canyon. We finally started to climb out of the canyon, and at that time I didn't 2384 realize that Mr. Russell was becoming mentally deranged. So we decided to walk to Hite rather than back to Green River. We made the trip to Hite in two days. The entire country through which we walked was sheep grazing land, where we encountered nobody and saw no houses. Upon arrival at Hite I went down to Red Canyon to see about my ranch and came back and we then went to Green River, Utah. 2385 In September, 1914, I was employed by Mr. John Richardson of the U. S. reclamation service, who was then doing some drilling at the junction of the Green and Colorado. I made a trip in the 2386 Marguerite from Wimmer's ranch to the junction. On the way down, at a point between Labyrinth and Stillwater Canyons, we picked up the Betsy Ann barge, which Wimmer lashed to the Marguerite, and then went on down to the junction. Kirk Gregory was also with us. I don't remember what we had on board, but recall that the water was at a low stage. I recall an incident or two where we struck 2387 sand bars, but it was not serious. The Betsy Ann had no power and was lashed in front of the Marguerite and pushed down. I would say that the approximate length of the two boats as they were lashed together was fifty feet; it might be a few feet more than that.
