Show Record 1550 In my opinion we could not have gone up the Colorado River at 1551 that time of the year with the boats that we used. When we brought the boat I have been speaking of down through Glen Canyon to Lee's Ferry, which was my second trip over that stretch of river, the only difficulty we had was in stopping. We went along beautifully over the smooth current and had trouble in getting a 1552 place where we could grab bushes and stop our boat. On again arriving at Lee's Ferry, we found that Mr. Lee had his wife No. 18 there and that he had built a cabin and was irrigating a garden. We waited there for Major Powell to arrive from Salt Lake City 1553 with supplies. Eventually these supplies ware brought from Kanab and part of the winter of 1872- 1873 was spent in topography 1555 work. In February, 1873, I went to Salt Lake City and found Mormon settlements at different points between Panguitch and Salt 1556 Lake. The county on each side of Glen Canyon is absolutely barren for miles. The same is true of Cataract Canyon, except on the Kaibab where there is a very beautiful forest. Wherever the country is below an altitude of four thousand feet, or even three thousand feet, it is extremely barren. That is practically the character 1558 of the country from Gunnison Crossing to Lee's Ferry. I made a study of Indian life in America and have written a book containing the result of my investigations. I never found any evidence of Indians having owned or possessed or operated boats on these 1560 rivers. Escalante's expedition was for the purpose of reaching Monterey to connect up the missions of the Rio Grande with those of southern California. The location of the Escalante trail is shown with approximate accuracy on the map which appears in the fore part of my book entitled " The Romance of the Colorado River". 1561 In my investigation of Escalante's expedition, I found no place where he used boats. 1567 Exhibit No. 221, which the witness said was an approximately correct representation of the old Spanish trail, was received in evidence. |
