Show Record the placer claims. Between Crescent Creek and Tickaboo Bar we were hung up on a riffle and had to get out and push the boats off. This occurred at Hite. I don't believe I could tell you how many times the boats were stuck on that trip, but I know we were on the bars quite a good deal, especially below Tickaboo 1899 Bar. I was employed as a boatman and assistant cook. I had formerly had experience as a boatman on Lake Ontario and had also had experience as a cook. Between Tickaboo Bar and Lee's Ferry we had no difficulty in operating our boats, except on ac-count of the extreme shallow water. I think we made one portage of about a half a mile on account of gravelly, shallow water, but can't locate the place where this portage occurred. All those points down there have been named since my time and I would judge that the place where this portage occurred was something like half way between dandy Crossing and Lee's Ferry. The railroad 1900 was to be located along the side of the river bed. I have an idea that Mr. Stanton picked up his survey line about half way between Tickaboo Bar and Lee's Ferry. As I understand it the line had been run down to a point a little below Dandy Crossing the year before. We were struck on sand bars several times and that lower river is more of a gravel bar. There is a good deal of fine gravel. When we got stuck we would get out of the boats and push them along or take them back and hunt another place, sometimes takes a shovel and stir up the gravel with the sand and let the current wash us through, I remember one place where there is a stone ledge or dike across the river bed. One of the other men took a shovel and waded clear across the the river to see if he could find an opening for out boat to go 1901 through. Between Crescent Creel and Lee's Ferry we saw, outside the Omaha party, eight or ten other people, engaged in placer mining. On Tickaboo Bar they had a forty horsepower pump. I never did know to whom it belonged but knew that Mr. Stanton was interested in it. All of the members of our party staked out some 247 |
