Show Record 2034- 2035 Mr. Nims was with party on the Stanton trip, went over the same reefs I have spoken of, and was present when the portage I have mentioned was made. He was with me on both trips. I don't remember whether we made a portage on each occasion that we went over those reefs. 2036 William Hiram Edwards, recalled for further examination, testified in response to interrogatories by Special Master that he did not think that any map or survey was used by the party on the Best expedition. Otto J. Zahn testified for complainant on direct examination as follows: 2037 I am 57 years old and reside in Los Angeles. I first entered the San Juan country in May, 1904, going overland to my camp 2038 on the river via Bluff. I went there to assist in placer mining operations on the San Juan River and remained there about a month 2039 or maybe six weeks during May and June of that year. Our supplies for the placer operations came overland. I had a man by the name of Gill working with me at our camp known as Zahn's camp, indicated 2040 on page 15 of Exhibit 10. we had two steam engines and two pumps which we used in our operations; also a number of sluice 2041 boxes. The San Juan River was rather shallow at that time. " Rather shallow, I consider, about not over waist deep." I had occasion to wade across the stream almost every day. In response to interrogatories propounded by the Special Master Otto J. Zahn testified that when he was there the channel of the San Juan River was about two hundred feet wide and about waist deep in the main current, which would be located about one hundred feet or maybe one hundred and twenty- five feet off shore.
