Show Record a boat that was grounded to get off and downstream, some of the 1803 men having to get out and push. This occurred quite a few times the first two days. I don't recall much concerning the stretch of river through Labyrinth Canyon, but recall part of the Double Bowknot. I can't tell how many times we encountered sand bars in that stretch of the river, but if you are not watching the swift current will shove you across those bars called dry islands. Then naturally the boat got stuck and we had to get out and push 1804 it off to the deeper water. We had similar trouble in Stillwater Canyon but not so much as above. Frank Dodge was familiar with the river. We had quite a bit of difficulty going through Cataract Canyon. One of our sixteen foot boats was capsized. It struck on a rock but did not do any damage to the boat, only turned it over. The men in the boat got through safely. Another boat was capsized in the same rapid, which I think was the third 1805 rapid. We carried life preservers. At the head of each rapid we would all get out and look the rapid over before running it. 1806 Generally no one rode a boat except the boatman when running a rapid. Where it appeared dangerous, or where one would expect to get wet, only the boatman would ride the boat through a rapid. At Dark Canyon we portaged the baggage around the lower part of the rapid and then lined the boats through. I partly know Narrow Canyon, and we had difficulty with sand bars going through that canyon similar to that experienced before. We had quite a bit of rowing to keep the boat away from the rocks at one place. Two 1807 boats were damaged in Cataract Canyon to such an extent that we had to stop and take the cargo out of the boats and pack it up. From Narrow Canyon to Lees Ferry we did not have very much difficulty except an occasional sand bar. Our greatest difficulty was the very cold weather. We did not have much work to do, so it was pretty cold, and that was what we suffered from most. We did not wear life preservers after we got through Cataract Canyon. After 1808 we left Cataract Canyon we encountered a few riffles. In the sec- |
