Show Record Bright Angel Canyon. I saw survey lines and marks of survey that had been run below Lee's Ferry on the first Stanton expedition. He had run some up on the side and in sections I saw Stanton's survey marks there below Lee's Ferry that he had made 2219 on his first expedition. Soap Creek Rapid is just below Lee's Ferry - I guess about forty- six miles. The first Stanton expedition stopped at what is known as Saddle or Fence Canyon. That is where we quit the expedition on the first trip. When we were 2220 operating the dredge it was located on Good Hope Bar; and we used to take the scow down to the lower bar about a half mile below and then tow the scow back up. We did not carry anything down unless It was something that was going out. Coming back up we would bring whatever load of supplies had come in, and we operated 2221 the scow for the purpose of bringing sin supplies. In our dredging operations we took out gold that was shipped to New York. I can't tell how much gold was taken out during that nine months. The gold left the river without being separated from the quicksilver. When any member of the party was going out, for in-stance when we sent the gold out, the person would go out at the same place that the supplies came in; we couldn't get out any 2222 other way. In going out or taking anything out, we didn't always take the scow down; unless there was a load they would take one of our two smaller boats. I have been on the Green River four times all told between the town of Green River and the month of that river; three of those times was with the expedition I 2223 have mentioned, and I was there once with Old Rocky. There were only two trips with the expedition and one trip with Old Rocky. Before I went on the Best expedition I took a trip with Old Rocky on that section of the Green River, trapping and hunting. We started from a point where the Green River bridge is now located 2224 and went in Rocky's boat to a point below the Wheeler ranch. Then 287 1404 |
