Show Record 2401 Moab and was taken thence overland to North Wash. We left North Wash at about one o'clock on September 1, touched bottom a few times between there and Red Canyon or Tickaboo, but " nothing serious." We also touched bottom with our cars in Trachyte, but did not use our power through that rapid or through any other bad water. We ran on to the bottom quite frequently from Tickaboo down, especially at Olympia Bar; opposite that bar I had to get out and nose the boat around to get it back where it should 2402 be. The stage of water was not what you would call extremely low and I expect there were twelve or fourteen thousand second feet in the river. Between North Wash and Lee's Ferry I remember only one place below Hall's Crossing where it was necessary to get overboard to bring the boat over. We just touched rocks in Smith Fork Rapid and drug the motor on the gravel for quite a ways just above Lake Canyon, where we were touching the bottom with our oars all along. At Shock Rapid I took the same channel I had taken on previous occasions, but it proved to be the wrong 2403 one this time; we had to zigzag around from one side to the other, but we got through. There was no more trouble until after we got below the San Juan, where we saw some pretty big sand waves. About two miles below the mouth of the San Juan we got into some real sand waves before we realized it. Ours was an open boat and if we had run the sand waves ahead we would have swamped it. We 2404 turned our boat parallel with the waves and got through there without being swamped. This sand wave condition continued until we reached the mouth of Navajo Creek, where we encountered some very serious sand waves again, but they didn't last so long. From there on we had no trouble. Of course from the mouth of Aztec Creek down we had the wave condition and the river was wide and shallow, which made it very easy to swamp your boat when sand waves were rolling there. From a point five miles below Navajo 2405 Creek we had nice sailing to Lee's Ferry. With reference to any noted changes on the Olympia, Tickaboo or Good Hope Bars during |
