Show Record myself nor, so far as I am aware, the other man who operated our motor boat on such trips, towit, Mr. Shaw, had ever before 2145 had any familiarity with that stretch of river. It was a battle all the way to get up or down; in fact, the first trip I made with Mr. shaw we walked the last six miles out of the canyon to get to Moab. Kenneth Sawyer testified on recross examination a follows: when I speak of walking six miles, I include the distance clear to the town of Moab. On none of our subsequent trips did we walk any of this distance but rode all the way. The Special Master recapitulates certain facts according to his understanding and his understanding is confirmed by Otto J. Zahn with respect to the following matters: 2146 The photograph on the left- hand side of page 31 of Exhibit 11 E represents the site of Zahn camp seen from the north bank of the river. The houses of the Zahn company were at the bottom of the bench which appears in the picture, as were also the boilers and the pump. The mining operations were conducted at the top of the bench which extended a bout sixty feet above the level of the river while the Zahn were operating. Harry McDonald testified for complainant on direct examina-tion as follows: 2150 I am past 77 years of age and reside at Highway Highland, California. Sine I grew to manhood my occupation has been trapping hunting and prospecting and I have been in the western 2151 country since 1866. I took some cattle through Utah in 1868 or 2152 1869, following the old Pony Express trail from Elk Mountain, Wyoming via medicine Bow, Green River, Wyoming, Fort Bridger, Echo Canyon ( Utah), down the Provo River to Provo; thence to Parowan and westward to the Virgin River, which we crossed many 2154 times.
