Show Record to Good Hope Br in boats. These boats were twenty feet long, sturdily built, and intended to carry about on ton. They would be taken upstream by rowing and towing. On this trip I met Mr. Stanton and his party with a crew of ten men. They were doing 2264 assessment work to hold the railroad right of way and were working in the vicinity of Good Hope and Hite. I understood this work was being done to hold the railroad right of way. Mr. 2265 Stanton's party had boats and were using them in going up and down the river. They were row boats operated in the same manner that I operated mine. There were the several small boats at Hite. The boats that belonged to our party drew about a foot of water loaded. During that summer, in July and August, the river was at a medium stage, and we did not encounter much difficulty between Good Hope and Hite, which was the stretch of water that 2266 I was boating on at that time. From my entire experience on the Colorado River, I find that it makes a great deal of difference whether the water is low or medium. I have seen a channel change within a week. I find navigation easier at a medium stage of 2267 water. I always preferred low water and did not attempt to navigate the river in the high water which occurred in June. I have been on the river at times in every month of the year except June. when I finished my employment at Good Hope I left the river and 2268 went on horseback to Hanksville. My next acquaintance with the Colorado River was in the Grand Canyon in 1907, where I did a little boating up and downstream for about fifteen miles at the mouth of Bright Angel Creek. I next went to the Colorado River above Lee's Ferry about twelve years ago, and have made a trip on an average of once a year through Glen Canyon for the past twelve years. The purpose of these trips has been to conduct travelers who wished to take and unusual trip, in connection with horseback trips and automobile trips, in the scenery lands of Utah. In making these trips we have taken our boats in through 2269 Crescent Canyon or North Wash to the river, launched them there |
