Show Record the boats over the rapid and came to shore below, where we reloaded and went on. Then after be passed Grand Gulch we began to have lots more trouble with sand because the river is quite wide below there; although it is still a canyon, it is a wider canyon 2328 than from Grand Gulch up. From Grand Gulch up the canyon is line and from there down the canyon walls are sandstone cliffs, where there may be a shore on one side but not on both sides, 2329 unless the river is running straight. Until we reached Clay Hill Crossing the some difficulties continued with us. I have already told you about having to drag the boats nearly through Indian Farms. I ordinarily had no help with the boats, but when we came to the narrows so that I couldn't take a boat down and then come back up and get another boat, Mr. Blake did some boat- 2330- 2331 ing. On one occasion our pack train failed to bring supplies as expected, and upon learning that the trail to the mouth of Piute Canyon had been blocked Mr. Trimble, at my suggestion, told the packer to bring the supplies into Spencer Canyon, where we had received supplies three weeks before. Mr. Hugh Miser, the geolo-gist of our party, and I took a boat up the river seventeen miles to Spencer Canyon and brought supplies back down the river in 2332 the boat. It was the hardest work I ever did. There were no Rapids in that seventeen miles of the river and the trip was tak-en in September. Exhibit 373 in a picture of Mr. Miser and I going up the river. The stage of water was very low and there were reefs across there where it was not four inches deep. We made the seventeen mile trip up to Spencer Canyon in two 2333 days. It took us one day to make the seventeen mile trip back downstream with the boat and supplies, pulling the boat a good part of the way down the same as we did going up. There were 2334 places we could ride and lots of places we couldn't. The place I spoke of where there was a bar across and a deep on four inch-es, we just ended the boat around until we got it across the reef.
