Record not as rich as they used to be and they can't make a living any 2520 more with present methods. The miners who had boats would go down from Bluff to their claim all down the river and would take their supplies with them in their boats. I saw three outfits go down the river that way and remember two outfits in 1904. I saw another outfit go down that way in 1906; when I was in Bluff, talked with them and saw them go through. I just happened to see the three outfits that I now particularly recall. I was only on the river two months in 1892 and next went back there ten years later in 1902. As to what occurred before I went in there or after I left, I of course have no personal knowledge. Most of the mining there was done between the years 1892 and 1902, during which period I was there for two months only. Richard Elmer Caldwell testified for complainant on direct examination as follows: 2522 I am a civil engineer, residing in Los Angeles, and at some time prior to 1922 was a member of the Colorado River Com- 2523 mission, representing Utah. I was State Engineer of Utah from 1920 to 1924. I think it was on September 8, 1922, when I first went to the Colorado River. On that occasion I went as a repre-sentative of Utah to Ball's Crossing for the purpose of making general observations which might be of value to the state. There 2524 were sixteen people in the party, including the boat crew. This is the same party concerning which Mr. Thomas testified in this case. I have made a notation concerning the boats used by the party and they were twenty feet long, with a five foot beam, and 2525 I would say drew a foot of water when loaded. As has already been described the boats were lined tandem, one motor being in the stern of each of the two rear boats. On our trip I recall the Whirlpool Rapid and some rapids at Bed Rock dam site. I think our party stopped at Bed Rock Rapid and there made just a casual examination. I took no soundings and do not recall that 333 |
