Show Record 2006 stage then present. We had run thirteen rapids in Cataract Canyon that gave us particular trouble until we had trouble at No. 13 Rapid. We always stopped and went ahead and picked out a channel before we tried to run a rapid. At No. 13 rapid the boat in which I was ridding struck a rock which had a little point on it; the middle of the boat came in contact with this rock, so that the boat was almost at a balance and stopped, which immed- 2007 iately resulted in swift water rushing over the boat. McDonald, Best, Jewell and I, who were all in the boat, had on cork jackets. Mac and Best jumped on to the rock and Jewel and I were washed 2008- 2010 into the stream, but each of us came through without injury. We 2011 endeavored to save this boat but wee unable to do so. Mr. Hyslop made a trip from Rapid No. 13 to Dandy Crossing overland for the purpose of getting some dynamite to use in an attempt to rescue the provisions contained in the boat and brought powder and drills back with him from Dandy Crossing. Meanwhile the water had come up and covered the rock and we had to abandon the boat. From there on the crew of the boat were compelled to walk until we 2012 obtained another boat; at a number of places the men would ride in one of the other boats; but where there was any rough water we walked. One of these boats carrying eight men and some equipment 2013 drew a great deal of water. All of our boats except the one we lost in Rapid No. 13 we run through all rapids in Cataract Canyon. I do not recall that we took any of the other boats our of the river, but we emptied them and ran them through the rapids light. It runs through my mind that we lined for a short distance because we did not take many chances of losing a boat. From Cataract Canyon to Lee's Ferry we had fairly good water, but I remember two 2014 rapids at Dark Canyon and another one somewhere below. There were several rapids due to shallow water in Glen Canyon. If we had had ten feet of water more than we had, I suppose we would have been all right. We had more water during August than we had in December of the previous year. On our second trip it was shallow and swift |
