Show Record Wash. this weight I have been is exclusive of the passengers. We lost a boat with provisions and some provisions out of another 2001 boat. This happened below Lee's Ferry, but on my next trip with the Best party we lost a boat in Cataract Canyon. After the Stanton trip, concerning which I have been testifying, I next saw the Green River in July, 1891, and started on July 3 or 4 with the Best expedition. Mr. Edwards' testimony in which he described the boats used on the Best expedition reflects my recollection. 2002 The only difference between the boats used on the Best expedition and the Stanton boats was that the oar locks and braces were heavier. The Best expedition left Green River, Wyoming, in July, 1891 taking with us everything we expected to use until we 2003 reached Lee's Ferry. We landed at Lee's Ferry, I believe, on August 26. We did not know how much supplies we would need because we expected to do a lot of prospecting in Glen Canyon and to locate ground; that was one of the objects of the party, which was entirely a prospecting party, and we took plenty of supplies with us to last eight men for at least a month. On that part of the journey down to the mouth of the Green River we were bothered a great deal with shallow water and that was the only bother we had. At some places there were a good many channels and we would have to pick out our channel. We generally didn't pick our channel until we stuck on the bars and then we would look for deeper 2004 water. I don't believe any member of our party had ever been on that section of the Green River before. The riffles between Green River and the San Rafael did not give us any difficulty, although they were pretty swift. We touched bottom on one of them but I believe we did not stop. At another place one of our boats touched 2005 bottom. I think in the Best party there were no boats stuck in that rapid. Between the mouth of the San Rafael and the mouth of the Green, both boats ran on to sand bars a number of times each day. Between the mouth of the Green and the head of Cataract Can-yon, there was good water of ample depth for our boats at the |
