Show Record the San Juan River during low water at the following points: Mouth of the Montezuma, Bluff, Mexican Hat, Comb 1689 Wash, mouth of Moonlight Canyon and Zahn's camp. I would say that the normal width of the river at those points where I saw it would be from one hundred and twenty- five to one hundred and fifty feet, and its normal depth in dry season at those points would be from a few inches deep to possibly knee deep. During those dry seasons I have crossed the river on horseback or oth-erwise, mostly on horseback; but I have crossed the river by stopping from one stone to another, without getting in the water. 1690 The place where I thus crossed the river on foot was just below the mouth of Comb Wash, where the rocks are a little larger than in some other places and in extreme low water you can step from one rock to the other. We had a ferry there at one time, but there is no ferry now. The ferry was only used for a period of sixty to eighty- five days in the year and when thunder showers would come and swell the river. I don't think it was ever necessary to run the ferry boats more than ninety days during the ordinary high water. Rains usually start in the latter part of 1691 July. The water recedes during the month of August and then in September there are heavy showers again, which swell the river. On such occasions they need the ferry. At the mouth of Comb 1692 Wash we had a boat about 30 feet long and ran it on a cable. The only other boas I have seen are ordinary skiffs from 12 to 16 feet long, 5 or 6 feet wide and flat- bottom. 1692- 1694 The witness given a similar description of roads in that section to that already given by former witnesses. 1694 Except for the first gold boom, I do not think there were more than twenty- five men at any one time placer mining on 1695 the San Juan. At the camp where I was working, I was foreman, and at that time we only had four or five men. Our boiler, engine and pump were brought there overland through Bluff. This was about 1696 the year 1895. I had a lot of oil claims on the San Juan and did |
