Marcel Widtsoe S'wimming ERNEST HOLLINGS, Coach The University of Utah swimming team again won the state collegiate meet, but this year the Brigham Young University pressed them so close that a bare three points separated the two institutions. The Aggies finished third. The five men who will receive their official "U" are: Captain Allen Christensen, Lee Christensen, John Kimball, Rolf Bolin and Mel Freebairn. Each one of the above winners landed a place in the state meet, the requisite for an award. Al Christensen copped first place in the 100-yard breaststroke and in doing so broke his own state record. His time was 1:21 flat. He also placed second in the 100-yard free style. The Utes also set two additional records, Lee Christensen lowered his previous time of 2:41 and 2-5 in the 220-yard free style to 2:39 and 1-5. Bolin established the first official record for the 100-yard backstroke. He negotiated the race in 1:22. In this event Freebairn finished second while Kimball won the right to wear the "U" by taking second in the 40-yard free style and as a member of the winning relay team. The winning relay team was composed of the Christensen brothers, Kimball and Bolin. Although Captain Christensen was beaten in the 100-yard free style, he still holds the record for the event. Frankie Nelson, a promising freshman and a member of the Nelson family, all crack swimmers, was unable to represent the Crimson due to an appendicitis operation just as the season opened. He will be back next year and should be one of those counted upon to replace the graduating seniors of this year. Coach Hollings has worked hard to produce a winning team, ably supported by Captain Al Christensen. Page Two Hundred Thirty |
