PARMELEE, Coach An early spring gave the tennis players of the school the opportunity to complete the school tourneys in ample time to give the varsity racquet-wielders plenty of practice for the opening intercollegiate match with the Brigham Young University, May 1, Mel Gallacher was unanimously elected captain of the varsity and he respected the confidence in him by winning the singles and doubles titles of the school. He will receive a gold medal, donated by the Utah Chronicle, for his efforts in the singles event. Charles Blevins, a freshman teamed with him in the combination event. Coach Theron Parmelee picked two squads to represent the school on the cement this year. Bob Goodell, Frank Loynd, Dudley Mays, Allen Christensen and Mel Gallacher were chosen on the varsity; and Charles Blevins, Harold Haymond, Bill Hayden, Dean Featherston, Clarence Neslen, Stewart Gallacher and Everard Bierer were named on the greenling squad. Blevins, Haymond and Hayden were later added to the varsity. Prospects for a championship team look rather encouraging with the available talent in the freshman to draw from. Haymond and Blevins, champions at their prep schools, L. D. S. and Westminster, respectively, will doubtlessly make the first team. Gallacher and Goodell should bear the brunt of the burden, although Parmelee believes he has a new find in Allen Christensen, a sophomore. The little Ute leader is very anxious to bring back the state title to the "U" which it relinquished in 1922. Mel made a fine showing in the summer tournaments last season and the experience that he gained on his four weeks trip back East should be a big help towards acquiring his desired object. During his excursion to Boston, where he with Ralph McElvenny, represented the intermountain country in the national meet, Mel was able to meet on the court some of the leading players in the nation. The great obstacle to overcome in the state tussle is the champion "Y" team. The school boasts of the identical five that won the banner last year and includes on their varsity such stars as Fred Dixon, intermountain and Rocky mountain intercollegiate singles champion, Hunter Manson and Lee Buttle. No other trio is more formidable. The Aggies were crippled by graduation, in-eligiblity and lack of practice and are hardly considered in the running. Providing that Utah makes a reasonable good showing in the state matches tlm spring, it will be represented at the Rock mountain conference meet which will be held at Boulder May 22 and 23. Last year Art Miller and Mel Gallacher won the doubles event over a strong field of Coloradoans as well as two crack Utah teams, Hammond and Howell of the A. C, and Dixon and Manson of the "Y." In order to plan for future university tennis teams, a freshman squad was formed, and to date they have soundly trounced the high schools of the city. Page Two Hundred Twenty-seven |
