THE GREEK LETTER ORGANIZATIONS Before delving into the intricities of the local aspects of the system it is well to consider the Pan-Hellenics from a national and historical angle. To begin with, the first fraternity, Kappa Beta Phi, was founded by Columbus shortly after he dug the Panama canal. From this it may be seen that the fraternity system is a purely American institution. The fraternity was musical in nature, many of its notes still being in the possession of college tradesmen. Great progress was made by Kappa Beta Phi, a Gamma chapter being established at the University of Bologna and a Delta at the Utah Agricultural college. The growth of Kappa Beta Phi, was stopped for a time by the Gallic wars and it now exists as an honorary drinking organization. The fraternity idea soon spread and Beta Theta Pi was founded. Beta has been spreading ever since and now has two chapters in Salt Lake, the Whoza Beta chapter being established at Moler's Barber collitch last week. Interesting features of the fraternity system are the fraternity grips and the fraternity secrets. The grips are supposed to be secret also, but Guyed book has secured, at great expense of course, some of the more important of them, and exhibits them for the benefit of its readers. None of the brothers could be prevailed upon to divulge the fraternity secrets, however. They were of the opinion that it would be equivalent to turning state's evidence. Soon after the beginning of fraternities, the girls had the original idea of forming sororities. The idea spread and many nationals were formed with chapters at the important universities of the country. Utah has but one national sorority, the Utah co-eds being too exclusive to affiliate themselves with any large and plebian group. The majority of the fraternity chapters have houses in which the members live. A typical cross-section of one of these houses, that of Sigma Nu, is shown for the benefit of Guyed Book readers. It was while making the cross-section that the G. B. artist secured $300 in clothing, etc. and was thus enabled to stay in school another quarter. THE UTAH FRATERNITIES Chief among these fraternities is SIGMA CHI Sigma Chi was the first fraternity to take a chance with Utah, making the grand leap in 1908. Since then its pledges have been taking the chances. The Utah chapter is run on an athletic and missionary basis; the ath-e-letes give the fraternity campus prestige, and the missionaries prestige with le Bon Page Three Hundred Thirty-two |
