The past year marked the founding of a new organization on this campus, and a much needed one. The University of Utah Athletic Association was launched in the supper room of Hotel Utah at the annual banquet tendered to the letter men of the school last spring by President Thomas. When a head-coach makes his call for football candidates and the number of aspirants fall shy about forty of what it should be, or when the basketball players are a little recalcitrant about turning out and many a husky student fails to don a track suit and give his, oftentimes, hidden talents a fair trial; then that school becomes infected with "dead spirit." The purpose of the "U" athletic association as stated in its constitution is "to foster a better athletic spirit on and off the campus."' However, its real aim is to act as an antidote to the disease referred to, and gossip tells us that Utah has the symptoms. The officers of the association are: Calvin Boberg, president;' Mel Gallacher, vice president; Hardin Whitney, secretary and treasurer; Joe Cartwright, Rocky Miller, Coach T. M. Fitzpatrick and O. A. Barnes, board of directors. Every male student on the campus is eligible and a drive for membership was conducted at the beginning of the spring quarter. Each wearer of a badge, which signifies membership to the association, has ample proof that he is no "tea hound." Social life means a great deal to an athlete in his college career, but who can gainsay that a good old stag party, where fellows mix freely without a thought for Emily Post, is the real tonic of good times. Such are the advantages of the U. A. A. The organization is still in its infancy and the future outlook looms bright and promising. Our new coach should find it a boon to his mission here. Help support it and make every student a Utah man, first, last and always. Page Two Hundred Four |
