Show (Song The Song Fest calls to mind one of Utah's most pleasant traditions; a carnival of music, held annually during the winter, wherein the entire school is treated to an evening of sparkling and original song. The various organizations on the campus have the opportunity of entering their art and ingenuity in open competition against each other for a silver loving cup, presented by Miss Lucy M. Van Cott, Dean of women. The idea of a song fest was originated in 1918 by Miss Van Cott who felt that the influence of good music, carried to the students as an activity, would do much to promote a spirit of fellowship and union on the campus, and would help to alleviate the feeling of hate and unrest engendered by the World War. The first year no prize was offered and, although the experiment was very successful, it was felt that student interest could be heightened if some award were offered. Consequently Dean Van Cott determined to give a silver loving cup to the organization presenting a winning number at the carnival. The cup was to be placed as a prize each year until some organization should succeed in winning it three consecutive times, in which case it would become a permanent trophy and a new cup would be offered. The cup was first awarded to the Alpha Chi sorority, and the following three years it went to the Lambda Phi Lambda sorority, who thus gained permanent possession of the same. This year a new cup was offered by Miss Van Cott, and in the race for it the Lambda Phi Lambda sorority was victorious. The theme, Campus Spirit, was originated and written by Phyllis McGinnley. ¦ ¦•¦ II II MI Hill II ¦ Page One Hundred Ninely-tlirce |
