Show o, Colorado 3 Little did we realize the true strength of those Red Devils until on the afternoon of the first day of November when we so exultantly watched the celluloid ball of the local score board wend its way towards the Boulder goal time after time which signalized the advance of the furious, relentless Ute attack that had spelled the "Y" 's doom a week before. We were actually outplaying the conference champions! At the end of the first half neither team had scored and as the report came over the wire that Utah appeared to be the probable winner how we yearned to carry the boys about on our shoulders! An then in the third quarter, Loser, Silver and Gold halfback booted a placement kick over the bar and we trailed 3-0. We gritted our teeth, a 35-yard kick from as difficult an angle as that one, isn't made very often. That red jerseyed team must have pulled out of the air the united message that two-thousand loyal Utahns had radioed to them. A plea for just one touchdown, for as the game drew to a close the Crimson backs had smashed their way to the six-yard line. One touchdown would win the game! Then Lady Luck intervened and a fumble prevented the marring of Colorado's gridiron record, an uncrossed goal line. A bitter pill to take even though we had only hoped for a victory before the battle started. Our respect for the Colorado eleven, their head coach and student body was impressed upon us after listening to the words of praise our boys had for them. Immediately after the whistle had ended the game that dedicated the opening of the wonderful new Boulder Bowl, Coach Witharn shook hands with Coach Tom Fitzpatrick and remarked, "We were certainly lucky to win today. You outplayed us. I congratulate you on your team's remarkable showing." This spirit of splendid sportsmanship was in the heart of every Boulderite and we wish them success in their conquest for an even greater year. Page Two Hundred Fifteen |
