Show Record had trouble with sand bars in the middle of the stream. At low water the channels and banks were not covered; the water rose about ten feet while we were there. 2974 In response to a question propounded by the Special Master Mr. Edwards testified that he was unable to say that if in going upstream at high water he had followed the same course that he followed in low water he would not have had any trouble; that he never did follow that course going upstream in high water because he bought the additional help that the eddies at the side of the stream gave, which help he would not have had if he had gone up the center of the current. Continuing his direct examination Mr. Edwards testified; These eddies flowed upstream for only short distances, but each of them would aid a little. As a general thing we had no difficulty in getting from these eddies back into deeper water. Occasionally we used the Riff Climber, but most of our work was done in a row boat with an outboard motor and the black boat of 2975 the Moab Garage Company. I had nothing to do with the road survey, bur went over a portion of the route with another man. After that road reached the river bed, it was planned to follow on down 2976 the river bank to No. 1 Well, a distance of about seven miles. There was a trail between Well No. 1 and Well No. 2, but no road. There was no trail or road from Shafer No. 1 to Moab; it was simply impossible to get down the cliffs on the west side of the river; it was necessary to cross the river at No. 1 Well in order to reach a trail out of that country. On the east side of the river there was a trail to Moab. I have been down as far as Lockhart 2977 Canyon, and although I have never been over it, there were cattle trails that we followed which ended up on the other side of the river from Lockhart Canyon. It is engineering practice to designate a preliminary survey with the letter " p". Walter F. Edwards testified on cross examination as follows: I don't know whether the end of the road as shown on Exhibits |
