Show Record is another at Salt Wash, and then what I call rapids at the Big Bend. There is a wagon road that follows the river as closely as it can. I rode in the boat but didn't operate it, another boy doing the rowing. We were meandering the river and setting the corners, which work consumed approximately three weeks or a month. 2740 I can't say that I estimated the depth of the river in that sec-tion. I have been on the Colorado River between Moab bridge and 2741 a point ten miles below Lockhart. This was in May, 1926. I made a trip to Lockhart and then made a trip to a point ten miles below Lockhart that fall. On my first trip down I went with Clarence Baldwin in the black boat of the Moab Garage Company, Mr. Kirkpatrick accompanying me. I don't recall any difficulty going down, nor on the journey back up, except that there were a 2742 few whirlpools and our progress was extremely slow. I should judge that the trip from Moab to Lockhart consumed about three hours and after reaching Lockhart we turned around and came back up to No. 1 Well, arriving there at about six o'clock P. M. on that same day. I don't recall any difficulty on our upstream trip from Shafer No. 1 Well to Moab, where we arrived in the 2743 morning, but I don't recall the hour. My camp was then at King's bottom, located a mile or three quarters of a mile below Mill Creek, and I got out at that point. The first supplies we received at that camp came down on the barge and thereafter our supplies would sometimes come on the barge and the rest of the time by pack train. Later we established a camp about half way between Well No. 1 and Well No. 2, to which point some of our supplies came by pack animals and the rest on the Moab Garage barge. 2744 I had no way of getting in touch with the garage to know when their boat was coming down and they only came down when they had special trips to make and I had no way of landing at my camp there, so that the bringing of our supplies by boat was very un-certain. Sometimes Mr. Swanholm would bring supplies up from his |
