Show Record Spencer made its last trip. I left the pack outfit and went on 3110 to the boat. While I was at Warm Creek there were about fifteen men working there, and supplies were brought by wagon from Marysvale. On one occasion I rode in the Charles H. Spencer about a quarter of a mile above the mouth of Warm Creek, when we came back, stuck on a sand bar. We couldn't go any farther; that is the only upstream trip that I recall. On my last trip down to Lees Ferry with the Charles H. Spencer, we tied the boat with 3111 ropes to a big rock on the bank. When I was on the San Juan River, we brought supplies by pack from Bluff City, Mexican Hat. John W. Palmer testified on cross examination as follows; When I was in the San Juan country we were building a road down to the river at a point about thirty- five miles from Mexican Hat. We were doing this as assessment work on the mining claims and the road we built was no part of the rain traveled road and did not connect with that road. 3112 On the occasion I spoke of when I went upstream with the Charles H. Spencer, I did not ask and did not know where we were bound for. I knew we were on a journey but did not know where we were headed. This incident occurred the same day we made our last trip down to Lees Ferry, and when we found we could not go up the river, we came back and went right on to Lees Ferry. There were six in the crew. Mr. Spencer did not go down with us. I know that we wanted to go farther upstream that day because Spencer said we did, but I did not know what point he was making for. All I know is that he just started to go up the river and turned around and came back. We left Warm Creek that day as early as we could get away and it was in the latter part of March. 3114 We arrived at Lees Ferry late that afternoon, shortly before sundown. It was daylight when we left - perhaps seven or eight 3115 o'clock. The sand bar that I say we ran on to a quarter of a mile above Warm Creek was on the south side of the stream. We ran on to a rock that day but didn't run on to any other sand |
