Show Record make its length forty- two feet. We put most of our drilling rig on the raft, including the iron, the wheels, etc. We used some of the drill rig timbers in our raft. I recall no difficulty encountered in taking this raft down the river, except at one point 3215 where we got into a bad swirl and the raft went out of sight. It was loaded pretty heavily and some of the light stuff that was not tied on drifted off, but the raft bobbed up again a little ways farther down. We didn't get hung up at any place and we made the trip in less than a day. 3216 We built another raft at hall's Crossing, going up the river to Hite, and picked up some of the material for the raft as we came down. When we arrived at Hall's Crossing, we added on to the raft and then loaded it with a nice little raft load of supplies. We had considerable trouble with the raft, but I don't remember being hung up anywhere until we got to Shock rapids, where we unloaded and went down and got some of the other boys to come up and help us. That was during low water and where the raft first caught I would say that the water was about a foot deep. In response to questions propounded by the Special Master, Frank Bennett testified as follows: 3217 One corner of the raft caught and it swung over on to the bar toward the shore and we unloaded the raft and may have taken some pieces out of it. I think we stayed just below there that night. There is and island there and I went over as far as the island, but didn't pass it. I don't believe I found any water there more than two feet deep and did not know which way to go to get deeper water after we got the raft loose. My recollection is that the ledge at that point extended up and downstream about an 3218 eighth of a mile. The only other occasion when I got on that ledge was when I went down with Mr. Stanton and we had trouble in getting his life boat through there. On the occasion when the Stanton life boat got stuck there, I don't know how far they worked the boat down, but I don't think they worked it but a little |
