I wouldn't say that the bars we encountered were those encountered in going from one side of the river to the other and landing or in hugging the bank; the bars appeared to be all through at low water. It was usually more shallow on one side of the river than it was on the other, and when we went over to the more shallow part we more frequently encountered bars. So I would say that most of the bars that we encountered in that work was when we were crossing back and forth. When going up and down the river we always suc- 1788 ceeded in going up and down. We were naturally intent on our work while we were engaged in it, but as a rule we knew where the channel was. When our boat got stuck we always succeeded in getting it into deeper water; as a rule we would pull it over the bar. Our camp at Lockhart was seventy- five or one hundred yards from the river and we surveyed about ten miles back inland to the 2789 east from that camp. Our surveys followed the river roughly from Moab to Indian Creek. I should say that the average width of our survey was possibly five miles. We had some camps that were five or six miles off the river on both sides and had from five to seven men in our party. On the east side of the river there would be times when we would be with another party, but part of 2790 the time the parties were separated by quite a distance. There were two parties operating on the land and as a rule one party in the river bed. The camps of the parties working on land were in most places inaccessible from the river. Each party had a pack train. Both my party and the land party could be supplied by one 2791 truck load. While at Lockhart more of our supplies came to us overland than by river, but I can't say how much more. Of course, all of the supplies of the party working inland came overland. 2792 On the occasion when the big barge was stuck for something like eight or nine hours, the water was at a very low stage and that incident occurred in August. 368 |
