Show Record has testified in this case. Our supplies came down Hanson Creek 3480 to the California Bar. When my party arrived at the California Bar they were traveling in four boats, three of them being the same boats we had used on our trip down the San Juan. We remained at the California Bar until March or April, 1898, but there was no open ground there, all of it having been located. Besides our 3481 the California Bar. While we were there Chaffin brought our supplies to us regularly whenever he made a trip for the men operating the California Bar. He would take orders and go back and get another load. In the spring of 1895 our party separated. Three of us took three boats and started down the river on a general prospecting and exploring trip, and we went down the Colorado to a point below Lee's Ferry. At that time there were some other men at Tickaboo Bar and also at Good Hope Bar, and I think also at Red Canyon. 3482 We did not see any other men between Hall's Crossing and Lee's Ferry. I made one trip on foot up to Hite. 3483 We prospected on our trip to Lee's Ferry. We contended against " some of the river elements, winds, and some not large rapids, good deal swift water, but we didn't call them rapids." I do not remember encountering any sand bars. " Of course, there were sand bars, but none that interfered with us except perhaps in landing we would find some sand near the shore; didn't bother us." We left the Colorado River at Soap Rapid, located about twenty 3484 miles below Lee's Ferry, and went from there on foot to Flagstaff. In response to questions propounded by the Special Master Mr. Mendenhall testified: From where we started on the San Juan River to the place where we left the Colorado River consumed the period between September, 1894, and the latter part of March or first of April, 1895. Except for my trip over to Escalante I was on the river all the time and my party was on the river all of the time. During all of 488 |
