Show Record The first motor boat above mentioned was a black boat of the Moab Garage Company, operated by Clarence Baldwin, and the outboard motor boat was operated by Mr. Swanholm. On our trip down the river the only difficulties encountered were striking bars and being held up for a few minutes. It was not necessary to get out of the boat at any time. We had no trouble in operating 2679 the boat with the outboard motor, and I do not recall encountering any sand bars, mud or whirlpools or hitting any rocks. The river was low at that time and much lower then it was on my May trip. I believe that when we were meandering below Moab 2680 we were stuck a good many times with a small boat. That was at a place three to nine or ten miles below Moab. It was in the latter part of September and early in October and I was personally in the boat and spent three or four days on the Colorado River, assisting in the surveying and crossing the river from point 2681 to point possibly six, eight or times. In the stretch beginning six or eight miles below Moab and running down to a point eight or ten miles below Moab, the channel changed a good many times during the three or four days. Again in November, 2682 1926, I made a trip in the black boat to No. 1 Well, Clarence Baldwin being in charge of the boat. The boat I have spoken of using in September was our own sixteen- foot boat employed in our meander work. In November I also used our boat to go from No. 1 Well to No. 2. On that trip I rode in the large barge of the Moab Garage Company from No. 1 Well to the mouth of Mill Creek, where I was to meet Mr. Moore and go on up to Moab. I didn't go on up to Moab in the big barge because I couldn't; it got 2683 stuck. I am not sure whether I jumped or waded ashore or went to shore in a small boat that they had on the barge, which remained there overnight. I assume that the large barge remained there overnight because I had some baggage on it, which was to go on to Moab, and I couldn't get it because the barge didn't arrive |
